About the Author

Donna Wyland is an award-winning author, editor, and coach. How do you handle moments when inspiration seems hard to find?

This is an excellent question. Inspiration is squashed by distraction, personal issues, overwhelm, and stress. It is also hard to find if I’m not in the Word each day. When life gets too busy, it’s hard to hear from the Lord and even keep a project moving forward because, without inspiration from Holy Spirit, I don’t have a lot to say that is as meaningful or impactful as God’s words are. Sometimes I can take a long walk in nature or listen to worship music or read a devotional to ponder and pray about, and the inspiration slowly returns. Sometimes, I just need to trust by faith that inspiration will return as I wait patiently for God to speak.

What’s one writing rule you believe in and one you think is made to be broken?

I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying ‘Write what you know.’ I used to bristle against that but have found over the years that my personal experience in life and with the Lord really do inspire and motivate my writing. A writing rule I believe was made to be broken is ‘Write to the market.’ I understand how writing about what’s currently popular can sell more books, but I believe that writing what God puts on my heart matters more. Would I love to be a New York Times best-selling author? You bet. But more than that, I want to be the scribe God called me to be and put out into the world the words He alone gives me to write.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

When I’m not writing, I love to walk and play piano and do crossword puzzles. Sometimes I play a little too much Solitaire on my phone justifying it as a ‘brain exercise.’ Lol I also love to read and have several books going at the same time.

What are you working on next?

I have several projects on my desk right now – two picture books, a novel, and nonfiction book about the lavish love of God. If there were only 48 hours in a day I could complete them all this year, but alas, it will take more time than that to bring them to life.

Is there a genre or format you haven’t tried yet but would like to?

Yes! I would love to write a series of novellas that are clean, witty, romantic, and fun to read. Think Hallmark in short novels and you’ve got my dream pictured perfectly. I’ve started a couple of them but then need to move to other projects. Some day…
