Sasha Di Carlo has spent her life in her famous actress mother’s shadow, longing for family and roots. When she learns she has an uncle in Indian Territory, she seizes the chance for a new beginning. Upon arriving at her uncle’s ranch, she finds herself drawn to his quiet carpenter, Jim Conners, even as she struggles to embrace her Creek heritage.
Jim Conners came to Indian Territory hoping to escape the nightmares of his time in the Spanish-American War. Working for kind-hearted Dewey Hummingbird has helped heal his spirit, but Dewey’s beautiful niece stirs long-buried feelings. Just as his discovery of his own Native American ancestry offers the opportunity to build a bridge between them, corrupt oil companies target Dewey’s land. As Sasha and Jim work to protect their loved ones and help struggling oil field widows, they discover that true wealth lies not in riches, but in faith, family, and the courage to love.

More from Vickie
If you read Sooner or Later, you met Jimmy when he was a young boy. He’s now grown and struggling with PTSD after fighting in the war. Oklahoma, at this time, was split in two, with the eastern section being Indian Territory and the western half, the Oklahoma Territory. Jimmy has left his family and taken a job building a house for an older Indian man. But he’s soon in for a big surprise.Interview with the Author
- Do you read books in this genre?
Yes—a lot. If so, who do you like to read? My favorite authors are Karen Witemeyer, Linda Ford, and Lacy Williams. I also enjoy a good suspense, and Lynette Eason is my favorite in that genre.
- If a reader were to ask you what author you are like, what would you answer? I’ve been compared to Mary Connealy in the past. She writes western Christian fiction and includes a good amount of humor in her books. I always have humor in my stories too.
- What helps you to write? Do you eat snacks, listen to music?
I need quiet when I write. I don’t listen to music or the tv when writing. I always have a cup of ice water nearby and have been known to eat a piece of chocolate or two.
- If you could travel back in time, what time period would you go to?
I’d like to go back to a small Texas town in the 1880s and see what life was really like then.
- What is your favorite book and why?
I don’t have a favorite book that I’ve read, but if you mean a favorite of the books I’ve written, I’d have to say The Anonymous Bride. It’s a second-chance-at-love story as well as a mail-order bride tale. There’s an ornery tomboy who creates lots of trouble for her mom. The premise of the book is: Three mail-order brides show up in the same town, expecting to marry the town marshal—but he didn’t order a bride.
- What is your favorite hymn and why?
That’s hard because there are so many good ones. We played In Christ Alone at my mom’s funeral. I really love that one.
Here’s the first verse:
In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when striving cease My comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand
- What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?
When I had been married only six months, my husband and I went with a group of young adult Christians to live on a kibbutz (community-owned farm) in Israel for a year. We got to travel to all parts of Israel during that year. It was an incredible experience.
- What inspired you to write this book?
A Wealth Beyond Riches is the third book in a historical series about Oklahoma and book 6 in my Windswept Weddings series. I wanted to touch on the oil strike days, so that’s part of the reason I wrote this book. Also, Jim was a boy in Sooner or Later. I wrote his sister Katie’s story in The Bounty Hunter and the Bride, so I needed to complete Jim’s story.
- Share with me a few of your favorite things.
I’ve been married over fifty years, and my husband Robert and I have four grown sons. One is married and has our only grandchild—a girl named Hailey —who will turn 20 this month. She’s studying forensics in college. I also enjoy gardening, reading, and traveling when I can, making handmade cards and 3-d pictures from card stock.
