Why An Ancient Worship Movement? 10 Reasons from the Early Church Fathers As the author of An Ancient Worship Movement, and founder of St. Thomas Church I’ve spent years reflecting on the wisdom of the early Church Fathers—those giants of faith like Ignatius, Justin Martyr, and Augustine who shaped Christianity in its purest days. Their writings reveal a worship so vibrant and real that it pierces through the noise of our modern age. Here are 10 reasons, drawn from their own words, why we desperately need a new ancient expression of worship today. Clement of Rome taught us, “Let us cleave to righteousness, for our whole life is a sacrifice to God.” The Fathers didn’t see worship as a Sunday event but as a constant offering. Today, we’ve boxed it into schedules and stages—don’t we need to live it again, every moment?- To Restore the Power of Prayer
- To Center on the Eucharist’s Mystery
- To Embrace Simplicity Over Spectacle
- To Rekindle Evangelistic Zeal
- To Foster True Community
- To Confront Modern Drift
- To Ignite Personal Revival
- To Ground Us in Practical Faith
- To Dream of a Renewed Church
Interview with the Author
1. Why do you think the topic of your book is important?
I believe the journey from a historic protestant experience to house Churches made me realize the re-writing of history happening in evangelical type settings and how modern Christianity is in danger of losing its foundations and purpose. House Churches in themselves are not wrong as the Book of Acts began with liturgical ancient worship. It is the losing of the reason and “why” of Church to every mans opinion of what Church should be. Peterson said: “Jung prophesied that the end of the protestant church would be that it would split until every individual is their own church.” This really hits to the heart of the issue that each person is re-defining what Church should be instead of accepting what the first Apostles, Jesus and continuing bishops (apostles) agreed upon.
So the books I am writing come out of the burden to encourage us to look back at the tried and tested historic creeds and beliefs of the ancient Church.
I am excited to see others benefit and grow in the understanding as they read, ‘An Ancient Worship Movement.’
2. What did you learn from writing this book?
My spiritual journey from going from a presbyterian Church to Calvary Chapel movement, to house Churches and now to historic Anglican Churches has happened over the length of 25+ years of experiencing these congregations of God’s people.
I believe authors should write out of their own life experiences and purposes. We are here for a reason and experience what we do for reasons to help others.
3. What is your favorite verse and why?
Colossians 3:2 – “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
For me this verse has meant that I am a pilgrim on this earth and I should hold it loosely. Heaven is soon, Christ is everything, early riches disappoint and are fading, eternity is forever.
4. Do you have a favorite Puritan? If so, who and why would you choose them?
CH Spurgeon has been considered the “last” Puritan by many. His writings, sermons and quotability are hard to match. I have run across so many important staring quotes by CH Spurgeon on a variety of topics. Here are 3 to be inspired by:
1) “I fear we shall never have the old power in our preaching until we have it back in our pulpits. We shall never have it in our pulpits until we have it back in our closets. And we shall never have it back in our closets until we have it back in our hearts—that first love, that love which brought us to Christ, that love which kindled our hearts when we first knew Him.” —Sermon: The First Love Revived, 1856
2) “When the heart is full of love to Jesus, then the tongue is not slow to speak. It is a sign of our having left our first love when we are slow to speak of our Lord.” —Sermon: The First Love Revived, 1856
3) “A spark of love in the soul is better than a mountain of gold in the hand. Oh, to have the first love that once burned so bright, that we could not sleep for longing after Christ!” —Sermon: A Sermon for the New Year, 1866
5. Outside of the Bible, what is the one book or author that has had the biggest influence on you?
The Memoirs of Robert Murray M’Cheyne, The Imitation of Christ by Thomas A Kempis are a few favourites that have had a great important on my life. M’Cheyne has really forced me to be more eternity minded. A Kempis has taught me the great important of humility and how to walk in it.
