August 2026 Back to School Scavenger Hunt Stop Seventeen: I Can’t Believe They’re Gone by Karen Brough

Excerpt from the Book

Tiny Mouse was still so quiet, and barely nibbled a crumb. Then they went to bed. Mumma slept on and off, waking during the night. Papa snored extra loudly, exhausted after feeling so much. Big Mouse tossed and turned and got caught up in his sheets. Small Mouse didn’t move a muscle all night. And Tiny… well, Tiny Mouse didn’t sleep a wink. In the morning, Tiny crept outside to visit Bear. “Bear, why do I feel so… so… so… numb?” Bear could see Tiny Mouse was struggling. “Come sit with me, Tiny,” Bear said, and Tiny sat on his knee. Bear enfolded him with a gentle hug. “Feeling numb means you’ve lost someone dear. And you’re trying to work out what life will be like without them near.”

When your child is grieving, and you don’t know what to say or how to help. Grief is overwhelming for all of us. Whether your child is grieving the death of a parent, grandparent, sibling, friend, or beloved pet, experiencing family separation, moving away, changing schools, or facing another significant loss and life change, they need gentle guidance to understand their big feelings—and you need tools to help them through it. Unlike many grief books, the story leaves space for children to bring their own experience into the journey, allowing families to see their unique situation reflected in its pages. This gentle approach creates opportunities for meaningful conversations about grief, loss, emotions, and remembrance. Perfect for: • Children experiencing grief and loss • Parents who want gentle tools to help their child process emotions • Families needing reassurance that all grief responses are normal • Teachers, counsellors, therapists, and anyone supporting a grieving child Your child will discover: • That their feelings are normal and there’s no “right” way to grieve • How different people express grief in their own unique ways • That they’re not alone in their feelings • Healthy ways to remember and honour someone they miss • Hope for the journey ahead Follow the mouse family as gentle Bear helps each one understand their grief. Even quiet little Tiny finds his voice. Together, you’ll learn that emotions “aren’t good or bad or right or wrong, they just are.” Available in multiple languages: French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
