Book Excerpt

Ms. Rosewater lived alone and sometimes seemed to struggle with her mail and trash, among other things. She always let it pile up without her assistant, Willoughby. I retrieved our mail and hers. “Thank you, Candy.” I rolled her trashcan up the driveway and carried her mail inside. When I saw Flora, Ms. Rosewater’s cat, I took a mini pretzel from co-op that was living in my pocket, broke off a piece, and let the cat nibble on it. The cat purred and rubbed against my legs. “You’re such a kind girl,” Ms. Rosewater said as she walked inside. Ms. Rosewater wasn’t old, but she kept to herself. Our families did business a lot, but I never really spoke to her much. But she was kind when she saw me, and I was happy to help. “I put your mail on the counter,” I told her. “Thank you, Candy.” I left and crossed the manicured lawn and went back home. “Here’s our mail.” I plopped our mail on the table and noticed Mom reviewing the documents from her briefcase. She now sat on the couch and wore her reading glasses and motioned for me to join her. I curled up on the couch next to her, letting my toes dig into the soft cushions. Out of nowhere, piercing sirens wailed in front of the house.
