The Interesting “Task” of Choosing Character Names I wrote the first rendition of Dangerous Dalliance many years ago. Obviously, it wasn’t published, so I put it aside and continued writing other novels. After publishing my ninth book, I decided to revise the story. Choosing names for my characters, especially the hero and heroine, is a task I take seriously. I read through my lists and check online sites. I don’t go to that much trouble for my secondary characters, but I have a quirky way to choose their names. I spent twenty-five years working in the public school system. Many students stand out in my memory for positive reasons. However, I remember a few kids or their parents less favorably. Any teacher will understand. Well, the names of those students or parents often play a role in my stories as secondary characters who don’t leave a positive impression. The name of a major secondary character in my original Dangerous Dalliance was Brandon. From the first moment my student with that name entered my classroom as a four-year-old with severe allergies, a language delay, and behavioral issues until the day his family moved out of state, his behaviors and antics provided me with giggles and frustration. Fast-forward several years. I live in a retirement community where we have 24/7 concierge services. When I moved here, the young man in charge was named Brandon. When I revised my original story, I frequently chatted with him. He was such a lovely person and treated us “older” folks with so much compassion. Now, the name Brandon no longer conjured up images of my student but of the man I wanted to adopt as a grandson. (I found out many residents felt the same way.) I told him about my story and the reason I chose a different name for my guy. Brandon left a few months later, and in a note he wrote me, he said, he would always remember that I changed the name of a character in my novel because of him, and he hoped he could live up to my high opinion of him.Interview with the Author
- Do you read books in this genre? Yes. If so, who do you like to read?
I enjoy Brandilyn Collin’s books, although her novels are heavy on the suspense. Another author I enjoy is Kelly Irvin. Her romantic suspense expounds on both threads.
- What helps you to write? Do you eat snacks, listen to music?
I like to listen to instrumental music and drink hot tea. I’m old-fashioned. I have a 5-disc CD player.
- If you could travel back in time, what time period would you go to?
I’d like to go to the late 1940s so I can meet my grandparents. All of them died either before I was born or when I was a baby. I want to go to grandma’s house and help her bake bread or cakes, sit on my grandfather’s knee, and have him read me a story or tell me about his childhood.
- What is your favorite hymn and why?
My favorite hymn is: “Angry Words”. Many of you might not be familiar with it so here is the first verse.
“Angry words! O let them never
From the tongue unbridled slip;
May the heart’s best impulse ever
Check them ere they soil the lip.
Chorus. ‘Love one another’, thus saith the Savior;
Children, obey the Father’s blest command;
‘Love one another,’ thus saith the Savior;
Children, obey the blest command.”
When I was a kid, my family only went to church on Christmas day. One summer when I was eight, my brother and I were invited to a church camp. It was a seven-day deal out in the boonies in Central Africa, no electricity. We had a bonfire every night and always began with a devotional. We’d stand around the fire and hold hands. One song we sang frequently was “Angry Words”. I loved that song and tried hard to memorize the words.
Later in the year, my parents were persuaded to attend the church that sponsored the camp. Imagine my surprise and joy when I thumbed through a hymnal and found the song. We became church members and after a while, my parents purchased hymnals. I still have a copy!
- What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?
I only began my writing career in my 40s. The reason – I was not interested in creative writing due to negative experiences in high school. I never thought I could write creatively until I entered a short-story contest for a children’s magazine. I didn’t win, but I didn’t receive negative comments, either. Aha. That began my story, and here I am many years later with ten novels published. It’s never too late to start.
