Now, she willed the lingering aroma of coffee, the smoky scent of cooling ashes in the living room fireplace, and the soft tick-tock of the family room clock to wrap around her, to envelope her in peace. “Olivia!” So much for peace. Why were their church friends suddenly hypocrites to Frank? She shook her head. “Checking on Zoe and Dylan. Be right there.” Olivia padded into Dylan’s room. King raised his head from where he sprawled his ungainly body across the throw rug next to Dylan’s bed. Satisfied she wasn’t an intruder, he closed his eyes. Her five-year-old lay spread-eagle across his race car bed, the matching bedding bunched underneath him. She stepped around King and moved Dylan enough to get the blanket over him. She kissed his cheek. In the next room, Zoe’s favorite Amish country hearts quilt lay without wrinkle across the bed, the top edges folded by her cheek, the sides draping in precise folds.
