More from Sarah

Life has a funny way of mirroring fiction at times, and that happened to me with Fatal Past—but not when I was writing it! I wanted my hero’s (and heroine’s) son to be school-age but not too old, so I picked second grade, which put him at age 7. This is such a fun age, as they are independent and inquisitive, and you start to really see their personalities develop. Little did I know when I wrote this last fall that I would be teaching twenty-three second graders as a long-term substitute this current school year! I began in mid-September and will continue through early March while their regular teacher is out on maternity leave. It’s been challenging but rewarding as they expand their knowledge and build on their kindergarten and first-grade foundations. Your turn—how has something you read resonated with you lately? Has a storyline mirrored something happening in your own life? Sarah

Interview with the Author

  1. Do you read books in this genre?

Yes! If so, who do you like to read? I love supporting fellow romantic suspense authors and often buy ebooks or print books of their latest release. Favorites include Jerusha Agen, Irene Hannon, Lynette Eason, Lynn H. Blackburn, and Patricia Bradley. It’s hard to choose a favorite among such good storytellers.

  1. What helps you to write? Do you eat snacks, listen to music?

Quiet! Plus a good cup of strong black tea with a little sugar and a splash of cream. I don’t create playlists or listen to music while writing, and it doesn’t have to be super quiet. But I do prefer silence as it allows me to get into the zone and start writing. While I can write in coffee shops, it’s not my preference to my office. Usually, one or both of my cats will join me, sleeping while I’m pounding the keyboard.

  1. If you could travel back in time, what time period would you go to?

I’d hop around from the 1920s to the 1950s. The 1920s was an intriguing mix of frivolity and modernity, plus those flappers with their swinging dresses and outrageous haircuts! And women got the right to vote, so that makes it exciting too. I also love the fashions of the 1950s and the bubble-gum happiness that era projects. Then the music of the 1940s, along with the movies from that decade, has always been a favorite of mine. So melancholy and bittersweet—feelings I’m comfortable with.

  1. What is your favorite hymn and why?

I love this question! My church (a member of the Presbyterian Church in America) sings a lot of hymns. One of my favorites is “Come Thou Font.” I love the theology tucked into the verses about how we’re to “tune our hearts” to God in all things, how our hearts are “prone to wander” but that God keeps us on track through his mercy and kindness.

  1. Share with me a few of your favorite things.

Okay, so I’m humming “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music as I’m answering this question. I love cats, a good cuppa tea, watching Britbox or Acorn crime shows (love those accents!), knitting simple projects like blankets, reading, walks with friends, and being in a quiet house by myself. Oh, and camping in the mountains! Pure bliss.
