That distinction reminds me of another rich young ruler: Cuzco in the Disney movie, “The Emperor’s New Groove.” He craved certainty in a selfish way but lost it all when magically turned into a llama. Given a second chance at palace life as a human, he ultimately found another kind of certainty, relying on relationships rather than power.
Our trust zone is giving up the certainty we create for ourselves by embracing the uncertainty that comes from a relationship with God. The relationship itself is sound and certain and leads to eternal life. But the details feel risky at times. We don’t know where God will lead us, and we don’t know how life will treat us, so we ideally come to rely on him fully.
In Luke 9:24-25, Jesus says:
“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?”
Losing your life for Christ? Sounds very uncertain.
But uncertainty is the soil in which faith grows.
