How I Started Writing My writing career started differently than most. I never expected to write professionally. After many years of short-term mission work, I felt God nudging me to write stories from the mission field. I laughed because I thought I was too old and I was not a writer. The nudge would not go away. So, I asked God to speak through my husband if this was really Him and not my imagination. I told none of this to my husband. About a month later, Bill and I sat watching TV, and he looked over at me and asked how my book was coming along? I cried, and he asked what was happening and I told Bill the story, and he responded, “I guess you’re writing a book.” I wrote my first book called Turning Mountains into Molehills. The book is a memoir of my experiences during those mission trips. I soon learned that there is a lot more than just putting the words on the pages. The hardest part came with the editing process, something I had not expected. As I reread my words over and over, I wanted to give up because it sounded dreadful. But I kept plugging away at the manuscript until it felt ready to submit to a publisher. My book, Gypsy for God, came about for several reasons. I love to travel and I wanted to try writing a fiction novel, so I thought it would be fun to combine those two items. And since I did not start my writing career until I was in my fifties, I also wanted to show others it is never too late to try something new and we are never too old to be used by God to accomplish His purposes. This book offers hope to those readers seeking a godly purpose for their lives. A Gypsy for God shows how anyone can transform their lives and their world regardless of their situation or age. We are never too old or too for God to do incredible things for us and through us. And, in these days of increasing turmoil, I think hope is one of our most important messages we can share with the world. Writing took me on an incredible journey and I hope it does not end soon.Author Interview
- If you could travel back in time, what time period would you go to?
Wow, so many to pick from that I could almost write a book on it. I love impressionist art so I think I would travel back to France at the time of all the great artist from that period. Meeting some of my favorite artist, like Monet, Renoir or Degas would be incredible. But, life in any of these older periods don’t include the difficulties of those days, so I believe the experience would differ from what I expected.
- What is your favorite hymn and why?
That’s an easy question, Amazing Grace. I love it for several reasons. We sang it on many of our mission trips and I feel it really unites so many of us with our faith. The song was also one of my dad’s favorites too. So when I hear it, it brings back so many memories of those trips and of my dad. It is not unusual for a tear to sneak down my cheek when I hear it. My favorite rendition is when I hear it played on bag pipes (because of my Irish heritage) and then tears will flow for sure.
- What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?
I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and we also lived in Canada before immigrating to the USA. One of the enormous benefits is that I have three passports. I have a British one, an Irish one and an American one. Spending lots of time in Belfast as I grew up, I saw my fair share of bombings and even experienced a small one exploding in the luggage area of a plane we flew from Belfast to London. The plane dropped thousands of feet in a matter of seconds, but we landed safely and everyone was okay, although very scared.
- What inspired you to write this book?
A couple of things inspired me to write this story. First, I wanted to try my hand at writing fiction. And then I realized that all our travel fascinated many people, especially the trips for our mission trips. This led me to want to include lots of travel for my main character. Once I had those pieces, I wanted my main character to struggle with all the changes that come in life as we get older. These all came together to inspire the story.
- Share with me a few of your favorite things.
I love to travel and go to far-away lands. My favorite spots are off the beaten track because I want to see things without all the tourism that comes with popular destinations. Along the same lines, if we drive places in the USA, we really like to stay off the freeways as much as possible and travel the back roads. This allows us to see the beauty of the country without the crowds.
Another favorite is spending time with my children and grandchildren. They all hold special places in my heart, so I love interacting with them as much as possible.
Thank you for letting us get to know you better!
