About the Author

Tony Stoltzfus is the author of 21 books on coaching, life and leadership, including the best-selling Coaching Questions (over 200,000 sold). His latest is Heaven: Experience the Extraordinary—a full-on immersion into life in heaven. His specialty over 25 years as a professional coach is working with ‘senior leaders in painful transitions’, helping them find the goodness of God in the midst of suffering. He’s had plenty of opportunities to meet God in his own adversities, including betrayals, losing access to his life’s work, depression, a home burning down in a forest fire, and more. His message through it all is, “there is nothing that can happen to you that God won’t make something beautiful of.” Tony has launched or co-launched several coach training organizations, including Leadership MetaFormation and Coaching Mission International. Do you read books in this genre? If so, who do you like to read? If you want a good rational-brain book in this Genre, pick Randy Alcorn’s book, Heaven. My book takes the opposite tack—I want you to experience heaven, not analyze or theologize about it. CS Lewis’s The Great Divorce, as well as The Last Battle in the Narnia series are favorites: he’s one of the few Christian authors to try to envision heaven through fiction as opposed to do chapter-and-verse about it.

I have a whole shelf-full of ‘I died and went to heaven’ books, although in most of them I skip the 12 chapters about their medical emergency and just read the one or two chapters about heaven!

What helps you to write? Do you eat snacks, listen to music?

Uninterrupted time, and lots of it! I write most productively when I consistently have 20+ hours per week to devote to it.

What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you? I was a math major in college, then I was a furniture designer for 15 years. Most of my preparation for being an author, coach and trainer happened outside those fields.
What inspired you to write this book? The original inspiration was a dream I had 40 years ago, where I found myself in heaven. I wrote a song about it, which has kept it in my mind all these years, and I decided early on that one of my goals in life was to make a movie about heaven—because if people could just experience 90 minutes in heaven, they’d give anything to go back.

What is one question you would like readers to ask you? What would be your answer?

I’d enjoy talking about the fate of Amanda’s mother, and why I’m not a fan of the idea of eternal conscious torment. I believe Revelation 21 and 22 describe a new heaven where evil has fully ceased to exist: where there are no wrong choices available, and no external enemies. The wages of sin is death: ending, cessation. For instance, no one who is a sinner comes into the heavenly city, and yet her gates are never shut. To the first-century mind, that means the city has no need to protect itself: it has no enemies. The other main line of argument is that most contemporary Christians believe in the intrinsic immortality of the soul—that we will all go on existing after death. But that is a Greek idea, not a Hebrew one. The bible is clear: those who live on after death are RESURRECTED to life. They only live because God puts his life in them. I do not see God putting his life into those who are dead for the sole purpose of torturing them forever.
