Excerpt from the Book

The door opened. “The storm caused a tree to fall on the tracks. We’ll be moving shortly,” Mom said. “How much longer till we get to Krakow?” Julia asked. “I didn’t ask.” “You should have,” Stefan grumbled. “Why did we have to come on this stupid trip in the first place?” “I—I thought you wanted to.” Mom’s blue eyes watered up, and she sagged against the headrest, lips pressing tightly into a grimace. “Of course we did.” Julia put her arm around her mother’s shoulder. She turned toward Hugo. “Aren’t you happy you came with us?” “Absolutely.” He sat straight up. “Being in Europe is the coolest thing ever. I never thought I’d be here in my wildest dreams, so thanks for letting me come along.” Mom’s face lit up at Hugo’s comment. A moment later, the whistle blew, and the train rolled forward. “Finally,” Stefan’s shout filled the compartment and spilled out into the hallway. Torn by his own emotions, Stefan knew he wasn’t being fair to his mother, but he couldn’t help himself. Sure, he was excited when Mom had suggested the trip to Poland to see the land of their ancestors.

About the Author

Carol’s passion is to write exciting stories that encourage, inspire, and boost the reader’s faith, possibly because she has always felt like an outsider. She was born in North Africa to American parents and grew up in France. At age 15, her family’s abrupt move to Philadelphia resulted in a rough transition to American life. After graduating from Penn State, Carol joined the Army in search of adventure. She was stationed in exotic—for her—locations like California, Arizona, and Texas. Since then, Carol has lived in Krakow, Poland, where she teaches English and organizes language camps. She also writes a blog on faith-related topics. Carol enjoys watching or reading a good murder mystery and getting nervous while watching NFL games.
