Hello friend! Have you ever felt like no matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t overcome something difficult in your life? Maybe it was a bad habit you wanted to outgrow, a closed door you wished to open, or a choice you needed to make. Within God’s will, Jesus in Matthew 19:26 says, “With God, all things are possible.” (ESV) This is why I wrote The Immortal Abyss. Like you, I have felt stuck in my limitations and circumstances. My protagonist Tol, an orphan, strives to carve a new life for herself by joining a rebellion and bringing reform to her corrupted country. But how can she serve her cause if she can’t overcome her weakness in her fire gifting? Like Tol, we can’t rise above challenges alone. So, what do we do?- Ask God for help and thank Him for promising to never abandon us.
- Seek friends who will reciprocate spurring one another on to persevere.
- Remain focused on our purpose.
Interview with the Author
- Do you read books in this genre? If so, who do you like to read?
Yes, I love reading books written in the young adult fantasy genre. I prefer adventurous reads with maybe just a little bit of romance. Above all, I look for fantasy books that point to truth and deal with hard issues honestly without glorifying the depicted problem. Long before I became an Enclave Publishing author, I read many Enclave books, as they satisfied the things written above that I was looking for. To name a few authors within and outside of Enclave in no particular order (and there are so many wonderful ones!), I enjoy reading fantasy stories written by Nadine Brandes, Jamie Foley, Sara Ella, Morgan Busse, Sandra Fernandez Rhoads, Anne Elisabeth Stengl, Lindsay A. Franklin, James R. Hannibal, Karyne Norton, Gillian Bronte Adams, and Christine Cohen. For classics, I turn to Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and George MacDonald.
- What helps you to write? Do you eat snacks, listen to music?
I almost always start my writing days with tea, usually black or green and straight with nothing adding. Sometimes I add honey and cream to my black tea on Fridays. I listen to a lot of music. While brainstorming, I can listen to almost anything unless the lyrics are distracting. When drafting, I choose instrumental music, but I am progressively switching to silence instead. During the editing phase, I don’t listen to anything and often read aloud as I go.
- What is your favorite hymn and why?
I don’t know if I can pick a favorite hymn, as so many have touched my heart. If I had to choose a hymn to sing or listen to right now, I would choose “O God, Our Help in Ages Past.” Both the beauty of the words and the meaning are so wonderful.
- What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?
Readers might be surprised to learn that I’ve lived overseas and in other countries, just as Tol, the protagonist in The Immortal Abyss, spent some of her growing-up years in a foreign land. Due to my father’s work, we moved around parts of Europe and the United States. Living overseas can change your perspective on the world in general, an experience and outlook I wanted Tol to have too.
- What inspired you to write this book?
The inspiration for The Immortal Abyss started by my desire to tackle the question of, “What is like to have almost unlimited power, talent, or gifting in some area?” Thus Tol, with her incredible gifting in fire, along with a dangerous limitation she strives to overcome, began to take shape on the page. Following her journey and thinking about how similar situations in real life play out proved to be rewarding, and I hope you enjoy the journey as well.
