- Why do you think the topic of your book is important?
Amber: You know, I’ve always been passionate about encouraging women to embrace their talents. But, one day waiting in the carline, it hit me—I wasn’t giving myself the same pep talk. This book is about breaking free from societal expectations, seeing the woman God meant me to be. And, I truly believe that transformative journey is something God wants for everyone.
- Why do you think this topic is needed?
Lisa: Life tends to come at all of us (both the good stuff and the downright hard) and we get caught up in the whirlwind. We get discouraged, wounded, and we forget that God brought us here intentionally with purpose. The book is a reminder to look upward and outward. We’re not finished yet. There is more to who we are than the hats we wear or the ‘to do’ list we work our way through.
- What did you learn from writing this book?
Amber: While working on the book, Tracy Glass, the author of Chapter 2, threw a curveball: “Are you afraid to lead boldly because you are afraid to stand out or are you ashamed of your story?” It hit home—because I realized I was still grappling with shame from my story. She inspired me to even be more transparent in my story regarding my mental health journey. Another contributor, Veronica Clay, opened my eyes to a new understanding of rest and what it looked like for me—because I thought I was just undisciplined in how hard it is for me not to “sit still.”.
- What is your favorite hymn and why?
Lisa: I have too many! The lyrics to the last verse of The Love of God have been running through my mind often. It’s been such a tumultuous time around the earth. When we turn on the news or scroll through social media all that we see is sides being taken, blame shifting. I am reminded that God’s love for mankind is greater than what divides us. He is always pursuing us with that love.
Could we with ink the ocean fill, And were the skies of parchment made;
Were every stalk on earth a quill, And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, Though stretched from sky to sky.
- What is your favorite verse and why?
Lisa: Philippians 3:12-14 has continued to help me embrace whatever comes my direction. In spite of my insecurities, fears or challenges I am challenged to press on and move forward. There were moments that Amber and I both were pressed beyond what we thought we were capable of. While we knew God was present every step, we also felt the stretching of those moments. It is so good of God to use us!
Amber: Romans 4:17-18 aligns with our book’s theme—God calls things into being that weren’t. He turns pain into purpose, brokenness into healing, sorrow into joy. As we walk by faith, like Abraham, God transforms us, writing incredible stories. This verse embodies the hope I share through our book, Leading Ladies, and all I do. In moments of feeling stuck, God revives our dreams and reveals our calling—often unexpectedly.
- What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?
Lisa: I absolutely love to binge watch those wilderness survival shows where you’re dropped off in some remote place to build shelter and find food. I wouldn’t last a day out there on my own, but I sure like to think I could! Lol!
Amber: Most people might not know that I playfully refer to some of my quirky phrases as “Amberisms,” an inside joke that not everyone outside my brain may grasp and some that have to be killed. My family are also reptile educators in my Springfield Missouri community so we have a zoo of 10 snakes and 3 lizards in our home.
- Outside of the Bible, what is the one book or author that has had the biggest influence on you?
Lisa: To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Amber: Let Go by François Fénelon
