This book came differently to me than my other ones. It was less plot and structure, and more—what kind of book do I want to write? I wanted riddles for them to solve, which created the Gamemaster character. I wanted a healthy family aspect, which began the process of repairing the relationships I’d burned in book one. And I wanted a character who knew exactly what she wanted and never waivered from that. Other scenes came from these wishes, like the chess game where the players are the chess pieces, and the War of Hearts played in the labyrinth. Together, I think it blended nicely, and I can’t wait for readers to get ahold of it!Interview with the Author
1. Do you read books in this genre? If so, who do you like to read?
I read exclusively in the fantasy genre! Books like Caraval with their magic fairytale vibes, or Fable with the fast-paced plot, or An Enchantment of Ravens with the classic fae story.
2. If a reader were to ask you what author you are like, what would you answer?
Stephanie Garber comes to mind first. I devoured her books as I studied my craft, so her way of describing things greatly influenced mine. However, Adrienne Young changed the type of stories I tell from classic medieval tales about peasant girls and mighty kings into new settings and fiercer characters.
3. What helps you to write? Do you eat snacks, listen to music?
I love to drink coffee as I write!
4. If you could travel back in time, what time period would you go to?
We’ve been going over Genesis at church so take me back straight to the beginning please.
5. What is your favorite book and why?
Ahhhhhhh I hate picking just one. Six of Crows, but that answer changes periodically. Bardugo crafted 6 unique characters with such a unique voice and a plot that made me feel stupid and I love when books do that. Honorable mention: One Dark Window.
6. What is your favorite hymn and why?
‘It is well with my soul,’ especially knowing the backstory of everything going on in his life as he wrote that hymn. It’s a great reminder to still my thoughts and focus.
7. What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?
I don’t know if this counts as a fun fact but I have horrible facial recognition. If characters on tv aren’t in the same outfit and context clues aren’t obvious, I won’t recognize them as the same person from scene to scene. It makes watching tv difficult, and might be why I prefer reading.
8. What inspired you to write this book?
Fae became such a huge concept to write about, and I wanted to spin my own version of it! I’m glad I did, because this was the most fun I had writing a book.
9. Share with me a few of your favorite things.
Board game nights, golfing date or brunch with my husband, playing Zelda with the kids, and living as peaceful of a life as possible.
