May 2026 Book Scavenger Hunt Stop Three: Guess Why God Made the Rainbow by Karen Ferguson

Excerpt from the Book

The boat was built. The animals had come. Now, Noah’s family waited. The people made fun of them because they didn’t believe in God, and they didn’t believe the rain would come. Then, one day, it happened! Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their three wives finally saw God’s word come true in the form of cool sprinkles misting their faces. It was what they had been waiting for. Rain! They scrambled to get inside the boat. DRIP-DROP. RAT-A-TAT. SPLATTER.  The light rain quickly turned into a violent storm!  SWOOSH. WOOSH. SPLISH. SPLOSH.  The heavens were opened that day; and water gushed down, as fountains broke out from the ground. The storm roared, and the rain pounded against the boat for forty days; but Noah and his family were kept safe. Then came silence. The storm stopped. But how much longer? Noah and his family wondered when they would ever see land. So they sent out a bird to give them a sign—first a raven, then a dove. After many, many months, the day had finally come! Noah and his family exited the boat onto dry land once again. Everything had changed. The landscape was completely different. As Noah’s family looked around in awe, the most beautiful sight painted the sky: a seven-color rainbow. This rainbow was a special promise from God. He promised He would never destroy the world by water again, and the rainbow is the sign to this day that God keeps His promises. In Genesis 9:12-15, we read, “Then God said, I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life.
