About the Author

Brett Armstrong has been exploring other worlds as a writer since age nine. Years later, he still writes, but now invites others along on his excursions. He’s shown readers haunting, deep historical fiction (Destitutio Quod Remissio), scary-real dystopian sci-fi (Tomorrow’s Edge series), and dark, sweeping epic fantasy (Quest of Fire saga). Every story is a journey of discovery and an attempt to be a brush in the Master Artist’s hand. Through dark, despair, light, joy, and everything in between, the end is always meant to leave his fellow literary explorers with wonder and hope. Always busy with a new story, he also enjoys drawing, gardening, and spending time with his wife and son.

Quest of Fire is a story told across seven books that took twenty years of dreaming and drafting. A story about the High King, who is a reflection of the King of Kings and the great story He has composed in which we are all taking part. Our God is described as “a consuming fire”*, a fire that also refines us and is shaping us into His likeness. My hope with the Quest of Fire series is that after reading it that fire has caught and blazes in the reader’s heart and gives them the courage to stand firm. Because Quest of Fire is filled with moments in which a vast, terrible darkness seems certain to crush a small group bravely bearing up that light, and they must choose to stand firm no matter the cost. The final entry in the series, The Unending Light, picks up that theme and sees it to its harrowing end with epic battles fought across a world built with rich, immersive detail. Heart warming and rending moments take place that just as much as the dramatic and sweeping conflicts force the protagonists to face the dark and choose whether they will remain in the light and see the Quest of Fire to the end or turn back and flee like so many others around them. So my hope is that others will read and join in the Quest of Fire, because even though it is fraught and hope is fragile, there is one truth that both the protagonists of The Unending Light and we need cling to: “the darkness has not overcome the Light.”** This story, like the great story, is about Him. * Hebrews 12:29 ** John 1:5

Interview with the Author

1. If you could travel back in time, what time period would you go to?

As a Christian, part of me would love to go back to the first century AD and see the growth and spread of the early Church firsthand or at least speak to one of the Apostles and ask all sorts of questions. I know God has poured out His Holy Spirit and given us His Word, so we have “all we need for life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3). But along the same lines of being able to meet together with other believers and experiencing how “iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17), it would be incredible to ask Paul firsthand about his travels and perseverance or the Apostle John about what it was like to live his whole life from youth to old age serving the Lord and experiencing everything from seeing the crucifixion to the empty tomb to Christ’s revelation on Patmos. I would even find it so incredibly interesting to talk to one of the members of any of the congregations to which an epistle had been written. To know how they felt and how they conducted their day-to-day life being so close to the events that form such a pivotal moment in Scripture.

2. What is your favorite hymn and why?

“Amazing Grace” has been my favorite hymn for a long time. When I was in high school and going through a complicated time spiritually, I wrote an essay that took lines from the hymn and used them to tell my own spiritual biography. I won’t do that now, but its words have always deeply resonated with me. It’s a song that starts with being delivered from slavery to sin and culminates in the redemptive hope all of Creation has been longing for when the redeemed are with the Lord forever, no longer at a distance, no trace of shadows or dark, and no fear that anything will ever end that joy and closeness to the Lord. The last bit is especially dear to me, because “Amazing Grace” is both the hymn that my mother’s family always sings graveside at funerals and the song my son wants sung to him to help him get to sleep when he’s having trouble. That hope that lasts beyond death and that I so dearly want for my son, knowing how harsh and treacherous this world can be, both John Newton’s original closing verse and the one more traditionally used now each encapsulate that so beautifully.

3. Share with me a few of your favorite things.

“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens…”

Sorry, had to do that. Which The Sound of Music wouldn’t be one of my favorite things of its own, but my wife really enjoys that movie and among my favorite things are those things that bring her and my son happiness. To that end, I’ve come to enjoy more musicals, romance stories, and dramas than I expected. Oh, and Minecraft, definitely didn’t expect to enjoy it.

In kind, they’ve each endured a lot of historical fiction and non-fiction, all manner of science fiction and fantasy (I traumatized my poor wife while we were dating by introducing her to The Lord of the Rings via the extended edition of The Return of the King), and thankfully they both enjoy reading, because reading is definitely a favorite of mine. We’re all also fairly creative, my other outlet being drawing and my wife’s is crocheting and anything crafty—most of which I’m not any good at but I’ve learned quite a bit by watching her. Some of my favorite stories are the ones my son has written. It’s ironic my wife doesn’t care much for The Lord of the Rings (which again was probably trauma-induced by me), because the line from The Fellowship of the Ring film:

“For all Hobbits share a love of all things that grow,” fits our family well. We all very much enjoy growing vegetables and fruit bearing trees.    

4. What is one question you would like readers to ask you? What would be your answer?

I would want readers to ask, “Who is Cinaed the Storyteller?” I definitely tried to set that up as a mystery throughout the series, because in book one, The Gathering Dark, there’s both Cinaed Black, the Storyteller, in the Modern Era passages and Cinaed of Black River living hundreds of years prior in the Middle Era. And there’s also the heroic Cinaed of Tislatna who lived thousands of years earlier in the Ancient Era. What’s important about that little mystery and would possibly make the reader regret asking me that question is, the answer doesn’t matter. Because irrespective of who he is, the story isn’t about him. As Cinaed the Storyteller explicitly says in book one and is repeated in The Unending Light. The story of Quest of Fire is about the High King and part of the greater Story he is writing, which in turn is meant to reflect Christ and how all of Scripture is the narrative of His love and redemption of the world and how yielding to Him as our rightful God and King is intrinsic to the part He desires for us in that Story.
