Elena was about to argue when she froze. Jamie followed her gaze. Aha. Noah George had just stepped out of the building, slinging a backpack over one shoulder. He hesitated, scanning the sidewalk, then spotted them. Elena’s posture shifted—subtle, but unmistakable. Her grip squeezed her case. “Oh, that’s him.” Elena shot her a look. “Don’t.” Jamie grinned. “Relax. I got you.” She bent down, scooped up her violin case, and exaggerated a wince. “Ugh. I forgot, bathroom. Be right back.” “You don’t have to—” “I do.” Jamie winked. “Emergency situation.” Elena laughed despite herself. Jamie turned toward the columned entrance, resisting the urge to look back at Elena and Noah. As she pushed through the glass doors beneath the rotunda, she glanced at the time. Already 11:32 a.m. Mamma was running errands with the twins. They’d be here soon. Still plenty of time, though. Inside, the hallway was quiet, lockers gleaming dully under fluorescent lights. She waited longer than necessary on purpose. A good friend knows when to disappear. When she stepped back outside at 11:37 a.m., pushing through the doors into the bright afternoon, the curved walkway was empty. The circular drive quiet except for the idling cars. No Elena. No Noah.
