The Bible Companion Book 6 Psalms Book Spotlight!

About the Book

Book: The Bible Companion Book 6 Psalms Author: Karen Westbrook Moderow Genre: Bible Study Can you tell God how you feel? The Bible Companion Book 6 helps you approach God with both honesty and respect. A simple one-chapter-a-day format lets you engage with Scriptures without the pressure of schedules, homework, or heavy reading loads. Short daily readings and thought-provoking questions connect your story to God’s Word. For personal and group study.   In the Books of Wisdom (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs), God speaks to us in poetry—the language of the heart. In Psalms we mourn, celebrate, and worship with people who run to God in the best and worst seasons of life. Their experiences give us hope. If you feel alone, if you are hurting, if you need grace, join the psalmists who find forgiveness and strength in God’s presence.

Excerpt from the Book

They steady us in our darkest hours. Like Job, the psalms give us language to express our emotions. They demonstrate that our Creator values our honest engagement with Him no matter how ugly our feelings or motives. As the psalmists open themselves to God’s Word, we see the Lord changing what needs to be changed and realize He can change us too. The psalms teach us how to wait, how to lament, how to hope. Most of all, the psalms invite us to offer all we are to God as worship.   Psalm 1 THE BLESSED LIFE Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked. Psalm 1:1   THE FIRST PSALM, A POETIC description of the life blessed of God, parallels the beatitudes Jesus gives in Matthew 5. In the Old Testament, truth often led with negative: “Thou shall not steal” (Ex. 20:15). Jesus reverses this tradition with the beatitudes. He states truth in the positive: “Blessed are the poor in spirit. …Blessed are those who mourn” (Matt. 5:3–4). Most of the psalms, including this one, eventually get to this positive perspective, which may explain why the Psalms leave us feeling encouraged and hopeful even though the book is filled with laments.
