“It’s always been broken.” Those were the words God put on my heart when I cried out to him in 2020 as I tried to plot The Unraveling of Emlyn DuLaine. My cry and the fact that I was plotting a novel were not exactly connected at first–though outlining does usually result in some weeping and gnashing of teeth for me. But I released my last novel in 2020 and happened to be working on my new series, The Rivenlea Sphere, when the world was suddenly thrown into chaos. Being creative in the midst of a global pandemic and significant social unrest is not easy. In fact, I found it impossible. I stared at my unfinished outline, asking myself and God, “Why is everything so messed up? Why is this world so broken?” I know the theological answer to that question, but sometimes, the soul aches. Sometimes, it feels like the whole world is falling apart in a way it never has before. When God reminded me that this world has, since the fall of man, always been broken, he also reminded me that he’s always been in the business of rescuing us, giving us hope, and pointing us toward a better future–one that is complete and holy. One that is fully redeemed. Over the next two years, an underlying brokenness that begs for solution wove itself into my storyworld. The Unraveling of Emlyn DuLaine is intentionally whimsical and fun, filled with references to beloved classics and packed with wry humor. There’s a magical library, a sassy dragon, a fish-out-of-water protagonist determined to dodge every YA trope being thrown her way. But underneath it all is the idea that this world isn’t what it was originally designed to be–and there is hope on the horizon.Interview with the Author
- What helps you to write? Do you eat snacks, listen to music? I’m a big snacker in general, but I don’t like to eat while I’m writing. It slows me down! Instead, I usually have a hot beverage and my water bottle handy, then I snack during breaks. I have a playlist I listen to for each book I write, and I also like to light a candle. If my brain begins to associate a particular scent with the story I’m writing, it helps me click over into writing mode faster as soon as I smell it.
- What is your favorite hymn and why?
I absolutely love hymns, so this is a tough question. But the first one that came to mind was “The Old Rugged Cross.” It’s my mother-in-law’s favorite, and I have fond memories of singing this hymn next to her in church in the early days of my marriage.
- What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?
I love to bake gourmet cupcakes. My first baking obsession was pies when I was around eleven years old, then cakes, then gluten-free baking, then cupcakes. If I ever have some spare time, I want to learn macarons next.
- What inspired you to write this book?
Some of the characters in this book have been with me for nearly twenty years. They were in the very first novel I wrote as an adult, before I was in the publishing industry. The story got a total revamp a few years ago when I was daydreaming and had the mental image of a girl beginning to lose her identity. Because I’m a visual person, this looked to me like someone unraveling at the seams—coming unstitched from herself and losing her essence. When this happened, she was standing in a sea of words. I can’t fully explain how I made the jump from that sea of words to “a magical library where every storyworld ever published is contained in glass spheres,” but that’s where this story idea began!
- Share with me a few of your favorite things.
I’m originally from Southern California but moved to the Pacific Northwest in 2021. One of my absolute favorite things is the cyclical flow of the seasons. I love bundling up in front of the fire with hot tea during the winter. I love the world awakening and the new greenery of spring. I love working in my garden in the summertime with an audiobook going in my earbuds. And I love the riot of color, the cooling weather, and the return to my baking oven, hot drinks, and cozy clothes in autumn. I was born and bred in the desert, but I think my soul is from Washington.
