From Chaos to Calm: A Shepherd’s Journey Through Modern Storms
It was a Tuesday morning when my world seemed to collapse. The incessant buzz of notifications, the weight of impending deadlines, and the echoes of global crises all merged into a deafening symphony of anxiety. As a pastor and global missionary, I was expected to be a pillar of peace for others. Yet, I found myself engulfed in a sea of overwhelm, struggling to breathe. Sound familiar? This scene plays out in countless lives daily in our hyper-connected, always-on world. We’re all searching for an anchor in the storm, a moment of respite from the relentless pace of modern life. It was in my moment of desperation that I rediscovered an ancient wellspring of peace: Psalm 23. “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures…” These words, penned by David, shepherd-turned-king, thousands of years ago began to work their way into the cracks of my fractured spirit. As I meditated on this psalm day after day, I realized it wasn’t just a poetic artifact—it was a roadmap for navigating the complexities of our 21st-century existence. This personal transformation became the seed for “The Way of The Shepherd.” In writing this book, I set out on a quest to unpack how this timeless wisdom speaks directly to our most pressing contemporary challenges:- Finding Peace in a World of Conflict:
- Discovering Purpose in an Age of Distraction:
- Achieving Wholeness in a Culture of Fragmentation:

Interview with the Author
- Why do you think the topic of your book is important?
Finding peace through the wisdom of Psalm 23 is critically important because we’re living in an age of unprecedented anxiety and disconnection. As a pastor and global missionary, I’ve witnessed firsthand how people across cultures and continents struggle to find genuine peace in the chaos around them. This isn’t just a Western problem – whether working with church planters in East Africa or teaching at Christian institutions, I see the same deep hunger for authentic rest and spiritual wholeness.
- Why do you think this topic is needed?
This topic is desperately needed because many Christians know about God’s peace intellectually but struggle to experience it practically. While serving nearly 500 churches across East Africa and the USA, I’ve observed that believers everywhere seek practical ways to bridge the gap between knowing God’s promises of peace and living in that peace daily. Psalm 23 provides that bridge, offering concrete guidance for finding rest in God’s presence even amid life’s storms.
- What did you learn from writing this book?
Writing this book taught me that God often uses our struggles to help others. During the writing process, my wife and I faced numerous challenges in our ministry work in Uganda. These difficulties pushed me deeper into the truths of Psalm 23, forcing me to live out the very principles I was writing about. I learned that authentic teaching comes from personal experience – our trials become testimonies that guide others toward God’s peace.
- What is your favorite hymn and why?
“Great Is Thy Faithfulness” resonates deeply with me because it reflects the daily reminder I receive while watching the sunrise from my porch in Uganda. Each morning, as I sit there praying and preparing for the day, the hymn’s message about God’s consistent faithfulness perfectly captures my experience of His steadfast love and provision throughout my 30+ years in ministry.
- What is your favorite verse and why?
I don’t have a “favorite” verse – mostly, I have verses that speak to me in the season I am walking through. Currently, that is Psalm 23:3 – “He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” This verse captures what I’ve experienced throughout this season of cross-cultural ministry in Uganda. It reminds me that God’s guidance isn’t just about direction but restoration and transformation for His glory.
- Do you have a favorite Puritan? If so, who and why would you choose them?
While I deeply respect the Puritans, I am most drawn to Jonathan Edwards. His emphasis on experiencing God’s presence while maintaining intellectual rigor mirrors my desire to blend practical faith with theological depth in my writing and teaching.
- What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?
Readers might be surprised that I learned to read at age two through “Hooked on Phonics” with vinyl records. This story is extraordinary because my mother, who couldn’t read herself, learned alongside me through this process. Now, she can read my books, a beautiful testament to determination and God’s grace.
- Outside of the Bible, what is the one book or author that has had the biggest influence on you?
C.S. Lewis has dramatically influenced my approach to Christian writing. Like Lewis, I strive to communicate spiritual truths in accessible ways, helping readers bridge the gap between theological knowledge and practical application in their daily lives.
- If you could sit down with someone for five minutes, what would you say to them?
No matter how messy or overwhelming life feels, following the Good Shepherd is a path to genuine peace. Your anxiety and struggles aren’t signs of weak faith—they’re opportunities to experience God’s guidance in fresh ways. Peace isn’t just possible; it’s God’s desire for you.
- What is one question you would like readers to ask you? What would be your answer?
“How do you maintain peace while managing such a demanding ministry schedule?” I’d answer that my consistent morning routine of watching the sunrise, praying, and writing has become my anchor. It’s not about having more time; it’s about making intentional space to experience God’s presence before the day’s demands begin.
