Book Excerpt

“I have something for you.” Digging into his pocket, he pulled out a bright blue feather. “Here.” I gasped at its beauty and gently ran my finger over its downy softness, marveling at the exquisite color. Aqua, like the dazzling water of the ocean when it roared in the morning. The feather melted down into a deep sapphire blue at its tip. Matias returned my grin with a toothy one of his own. “I knew you’d like it, what with watching the birds like you do. This feather is from a violetear. One of those beautiful hummingbirds that fancy the hibiscus blooms near the south side of the garden. Their feathers are a rare find.” I ran my finger down the plumy spine, delighting in the ticklish sensation. A work of art. Matias wiped his forehead once more. “I better get back to work but I thought you’d like it. Just another gift of beauty from our Creator. Bye, Red Bird.” I watched him stroll away, machete perched on his shoulder as he whistled a jaunty tune. His simple comment troubled me. This feather, a gift from our Creator? Who was he? Where was he? Yet my questions could not be voiced, locked behind a door of silence.
