More from Jerusha

For as long as I can remember, I’ve struggled with fear. As a child, fear of bugs, thunderstorms, and being left behind shadowed my otherwise happy days. Though I’m all grown up now, I still haven’t shed that shadow of fear. My fears are more grown-up, too. Now I fear losing loved ones, physical dangers, and death. People in our culture love to tell us it’s okay to fear. They say fear is natural and even helpful. But the Bible tells a counter-cultural story. The Bible tells us the truth that fear of anything in this world is sinful. So the Lord has been taking me on a journey to fearless in recent years. And along that journey’s path, I encountered Nevaeh Williams. The heroine of Unseen Danger, Nevaeh experienced life-threatening, terrifying trauma when she was attacked. Six years later, she’s still haunted by PTSD and frightening memories. As a security specialist and protection dog handler with the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency, Nevaeh tries to hide her fear. She can function well most of the time, as long as she avoids the trigger of getting close to any large, strong men. Nevaeh’s story was a powerful one for me to write since she is crippled by fears even worse than my own. Culture would say her fears are “legitimate” and “useful.” Some of Nevaeh’s friends and even her boss encourage her to use her fear as a tool. But that approach doesn’t help Nevaeh find freedom from fear. Tolerating my own fears doesn’t help me either. Excusing and condoning fear only makes fear worse. Because such fear is a sin which, when allowed to fester, will grow and spread until it takes control of my life. Nevaeh’s battle against fear is an inspiration to me and anyone else who struggles with worry, anxiety, and any form of fear. Her story shows that defeat of fear is possible. Freedom is possible. Victory is possible. Fearless is possible, only through the power of Jesus Christ. Do you want to battle your fears alongside me and Nevaeh? Reading Unseen Danger might be a good place to start.

Interview with the Author

  1. Do you read books in this genre? If so, who do you like to read?

Yes! I’ve been a fan of the Christian romantic suspense genre since before it officially became a subgenre with the publication of Dee Henderson’s O’Malley series. The O’Malley series is still probably my favorite of the genre, but now I also enjoy other authors including Dani Pettrey, Patricia Bradley, Sarah Hamaker, and Kristen Hogrefe Parnell.

  1. If a reader were to ask you what author you are like, what would you answer?

That’s a great question! My romantic suspense novels are similar to Dani Pettrey’s in that my series often follow a “team”-like group of characters, either coworkers at an agency or in the same organization, siblings in a family, or a group of friends. My stories also have a strong Christian message threaded throughout as they feature realistic characters fighting danger in a real world.

  1. What helps you to write? Do you eat snacks, listen to music?

Yes to both! I find I write best if I put on my headphones and listen to movie soundtracks that match the mood of the scenes I’m writing. That often means I’m listening to soundtracks from exciting movies like the Jason Bourne films, Marvel movies, and more.

And I always have chocolate very close at hand. Lots of chocolate.

  1. What is your favorite hymn and why?

Ooh, that’s a tough question. There are so many wonderful hymns that I love! I think my ultimate favorite is “It Is Well with My Soul.” The lyrics are incredibly rich and powerful, full of biblical truth to carry us through the storms of life.

The story behind the hymn makes the words even more meaningful, since God inspired the hymnwriter, Horatio Spafford, to pen the lyrics when he was going through absolutely tragic circumstances. The words and beautiful music of the hymn are a tremendous comfort to cling to during difficult times in life. Simply singing the hymn can get my heart and mind centered on Christ again in hope and peace.

  1. What inspired you to write this book?

A number of things inspired me to write Unseen Danger, but one of those is the need I saw in my own life and our culture at large to break free from fear. We’re told by the world that fear is natural and even good, supposedly protecting us from danger. It’s “normal,” they say, to worry. We’re given therapy and meds for anxiety and stress.

But what we really need is the truth. God’s truth.

The heroine of Unseen Danger, Nevaeh Williams, lives with PTSD thanks to violence in her past. She’s well-acquainted with fear of the strongest kind. The kind rooted in a real experience of danger and pain. People around her tell her the fear she has is natural and good, as long as she learns to use it to help her. But the more she tries to use her fear or simply ignore it, the more it grows and controls her.

I can relate to Nevaeh because of my own struggle with fear. And I know how the lie that fear is good only allows fear to take over your life and become master over you. Fear destroys lives when allowed to run rampant.

That’s why the Bible tells us to fight fear, why God calls us to be fearless, to conquer our fear—a sin we need to eradicate—with faith in the One Who controls all things and is always good.

God has been using Neaveh’s story to inspire readers to fight their fears and to show them that freedom from fear is possible!
