More from Daphne
It started as an idea back in the late 90s. It came to fruition in May 2021. The inspiration was this: salvation is free. That began the questions of: what if someone committed horrible acts, what if that person was indoctrinated and changed, what if when faced with the truth how would he react, and finally, what story from the Bible would work for my character? Of course, the story of Saul of Tarsus (Paul) came to mind. Blood was on his hands, yet he found salvation in Christ. And the story of Samson gave a bit of a parallel to my story, too. I wrote this book before the show Halo was released, yet I had been playing the Halo video game for years. I’ve always enjoyed the backstory of Master Chief, so the main character of When Legends Rise is a bit like Master Chief John-117. Plus, if you have seen The Mandalorian, then you will see a few common themes between my book and that show. There’s also a bit of a Star Trek vibe in that I use “tech” speak and plausible science. And what began as one book has now evolved into a 5-book series titled Legends of Light. Book two, What Legends Become, releases in June 2024 and follows the family and the continuing story of salvation, persecution, faith, and hope.Interview with the Author
- Do you read books in this genre? If so, who do you like to read? I grew up on science fiction. My first movie experience was when I was about 3 or 4 years old; my dad took me to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture. And that began my love of sci-fi. When I began reading books, it was anything I could get my hands on. Now, when it comes to sci-fi, I will read books that deal with the scientific possibilities, which amazingly is quite a bit; yet I don’t read a lot of books that deal with aliens. I will usually read books by Paul Regnier, Steve Rzasa, C.E. Stone, and a few others in the Christian market. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of sci-fi that isn’t geared toward young adults, so finding a good story has been difficult.
- What helps you to write? Do you eat snacks, listen to music? Depends really on the mood I am in at that time. Sometimes it is a playlist that I have cultivated on YouTube. Sometimes it is just whatever noise is outside my window. It’s really interesting during snowfall. I think my best writing comes from when it is hushed.
- What is your favorite hymn and why?
When the Roll is Called Up Yonder…this would be my favorite, I guess. It brings back a lot of wonderful and golden memories at the church I attended when I lived in Mississippi. I recently heard it sang in a Ukraine dialect and it was absolutely beautiful.
- What inspired you to write this book? It was actually an older storyline that I thought of: what would happen when an assassin leaves the organization he worked for. But after sitting on it for years, I revamped it to be: no matter the sin, Christ is there for you. So, I wanted to show how an assassin who was designed and conditioned could be used for God’s glory.
- Share with me a few of your favorite things. Books, pens, notebooks, and things that sparkle; sushi, strawberries, figs, and dates; rivers, rain, snow, and cloudy days; cats, windchimes, my sons, and my friend…Simple things in life.
